Microsoft announced Friday that it is pulling the WordPad software from Windows, ending the decades-old flagship product. WordPad will no longer be available in future versions of Windows, and Microsoft says it will no longer update existing software.
WordPad was first introduced almost 30 years ago for Windows 95, but in 2020 it was downgraded to an optional feature, meaning users can choose to delete WordPad from their system.
Microsoft has redirected users to Microsoft Word and Windows Notepad as a replacement for the useless WordPad. in Blog post “WordPad is no longer being updated and will be removed in a future version of Windows,” the company said, after listing its deprecated features. “We recommend Microsoft Word for rich text documents like .doc and .rtf and Windows Notepad for plain text documents like .txt,” she added.
Microsoft did not explain in the post why it removed WordPad and did not immediately respond to Gizmodo’s request for additional information.
The program was a free resource that could be used as an alternative to Microsoft Word, which required a paid subscription plan to download the software. Although WordPad has many of the same basic functions as Word, it does not include Features like spell check.
The company recently released updates for Notepad, which is also free, and noted in its post that “newer versions (of Windows) also remove features and functionality, usually because they add new options.
